Downloading an ebook to your eReader

Here are some basic instructions for downloading an ebook with a Nook, Sony, Kobo, or other non-Kindle eReader.

First, install Adobe Digital Editions and authorize it with an Adobe ID:
  • To download and install Adobe Digital Editions, click here
  • If you do not have an Adobe ID or forgot your log in, click here

Download the ebook to your computer:
  • Visit the NH Downloadables site: http://nh.lib.overdrive.com/
  • Find a book you want to download
  • Tip: If you are having trouble finding available titles, go to the advanced search and select "Adobe EPUB eBook" under format and check the box for "Only show titles with copies available." You do not need to enter a search term before clicking search. This will bring up a list of all available ebook titles. You can also put titles you want to read on hold or on a wish list.
  • Click the "Available - Add to Cart" button for the "Adobe EPUB eBook" format
  • Click "Proceed to Checkout"
  • Select your town/library and sign in with your 14-digit library card number
  • Click "Confirm Checkout"
  • Click the "Download" button
  • When the box pops up asking whether you would like to open or save, click the "Open" button.  Adobe Digital Editions will open and the book will download.

Transfer the ebook to your eReader:

  • Go to Library View by clicking on the icon in the top left corner that shows 3 book spines
  • Connect your eReader to your computer with the USB cord.  Your eReader should appear in the "Bookshelves" column on the left hand side.
  • If this is your first time using your eReader with Adobe Digital Editions, it will ask you to authorize the eReader.
  • Drag the icon for the downloaded title from the right hand side of the screen to the eReader in the Bookshelves column.  The book will then transfer over to your eReader.  You can click on your eReader and see that the book now appears on your device.

We will be having a Nook and Kindle Show-and-Tell on January 26, from 7 - 8 p.m.  We will demo many different devices, including the Kindle Fire, Nook, iPad, and Droid RAZR.  Register today!  If you can't make it, please feel free to drop by the library to have one of our reference librarians walk you through the process.
